"Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, "Prepare provisions for yourself, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess". Joshua 1:11
While God had already promised the land to the people of Israel, He still required that they plan and prepare to take possession of it. And when the people crossed over into Jericho, God didn't just destroy the city for them, as He could have so easily. Instead He had them march around it for six days and "shout a great shout" which brought down the walls (Joshua 6:5).
While God has great plans and promises for us as His people, that doesn't mean that we can sit back and let Him do all the work. He wants us to be involved. For the people of Israel, marching around the city of Jericho showed their faith in the Lord, that He would fulfill His promise and deliver the city into their hands.
As missionaries preparing to go to France, we can't just sit back and wait for God to get us there. We have to be involved, working, raising support, preparing ourselves for what's ahead. At the same time, we know that He is always before us, that He has promised to guide us and fulfill His plan for us.
In life, sometimes we are tempted to sit back and wait on God to do something, but the reality is that He wants us to get up and be involved- to show our faith in Him. When the people of Israel marched around the city of Jericho, God was with them. In fact, He was in front of them, through His presence in the ark! God never leaves us alone to do the work. He is always in front of us to carry out His plan. We just have to believe that and take the initiative to move.
