In the small town of Albertville we found most of what we needed at a store called Conforama. They offer a variety of sofas, bedroom furniture, tables, bookshelves, and the like. They also have appliances at decent prices. They have other locations around France.
A store called BUT is a another cheap option and seems to have a bit nicer selection than Conforama. They also have other locations around the country.
Our favorite find so far is a second-hand furniture store called Troc. They claim to be "Number 1 of the second-hand". They have a little of everything- furniture, appliances, books, dishes, art work, and unique antiques- some that must be a couple hundred years old. We found an old wicker chest that we decided to use for a coffee table- and for around $20! (see photo below) Store locations are listed on their website- www.troc.com.
One other piece of advice to IKEA shoppers. Check out the clearance section first. It's located near the checkout so most people won't see it until they're done shopping. We found a sofa there for 40% off because it had marks all over the cushions- which are machine washable! We gave it a good wash and it looks like new!
